A cross with two names… The Saint Martin / Iona cross is just lovely. Iona is a tiny isle off the Isle of Mull in western Scotland and it holds an ancient sanctity. Formerly known as the “Isle of the Druids,” its spiritual significance grew when St. Columba journeyed from Ireland in the sixth century to establish a Celtic-style monastic settlement. After his return to Ireland and subsequent founding of the Drumcliffe monastic settlement, Columba made Iona his permanent home, passing away there in 597. During its prime in the seventh century, Iona boasted Europe’s largest library and numerous crosses. Viking invasions led to the loss of the library and most crosses, leaving only three, with the most renowned dedicated to St. Martin of Tours. This connection to the French saint, known for his ascetic life and hermitage, remains a captivating enigma within Iona’s rich history.
